To get our fill of apples this fall, we made our way to Skytop Orchard in Flat Rock, NC for some apple picking. It had everything you’d imagine an apple orchard should – doughnuts, hayrides, cider, pumpkins, animals, ducks, cannon, playground, mountain views, fresh air.
That is everything but the apples.
Turns out, an early frost has ruined much of the apple harvest this year in the NC mountains for all the orchards in the area. So, instead of picking apples from trees like we usually do, we picked from bins of pre-picked apples in the barn. Still, it did not stop us from climbing trees and having a lot of fun.

An attempt to take a picture of all four kids in one frame is still as futile as ever. :)
Skytop Orchard is just a stone through from Grand Dad’s in Hendersonville, NC where we went apple picking last year. I highly recommend both in case you are planning a trip this season.
We paired our day trip (from Charlotte) to the orchard with a hike to Chimney Rock and to a Gem Mine. Mining for gems was so so so much fun for the kids. They could have practically spent all day there if we had allowed.
Apple Picking + Hunting for Gems + Hiking Chimney Rock = an itinerary that can be easily stretch into a fun weekend rather than just one day since the drive from Raleigh isn’t exactly short (4ish hours each way).

So tell me, what have you been up to this fall?
