During a recent visit to Pullen Arts Center here in Raleigh, I came across their new gallery exhibition by Jason Lord.

Something about the way he uses shapes, grids, and colors, left me very inspired.
When I got home, I dug up the 16in x 16in piece of wood artwork that I had thrifted a while ago. It had a dianosaur painted on it; a sure sign of room decor upgrade as the child got older. I had purchased it for $2 and Gesso-ed it, to eventually make something of my own. That was months ago and I hadn’t particulary figured out what to paint, until now of course.
I took a ruler, a plate, and a plastic cup to draw the pattern in less than a minute; trying not to think too much about it. Then I narrowed down 4 colors to fill in. This is the first coat, which I painted last night. I love it already! Thank you Jason Lord for the inspiration.
In this phase of life when I don’t have much time, I am iternally grateful to always find 10 minutes here and there to paint or draw, whether in my sketchbook, or canvas, or whatever the kids hand me saying “make something mama”.
Unsolicitated Advice to anyone who needs it: Don’t wait to be good at drawing to sit down and draw. Nor should you wait to find time because there is never enough. Keep a sketchbook and keep basic art supplies handy at the kitchen counter say. It is very theraputic and fun; not only in the moment when you are messing around on the page, but also when you flip through a finished book down the road.

The taper candle holder currently holding a cork is Asha’s clay work. The owl was something I made with leftover air-dry. The mini clay sculptors are Ajay’s creation.
