A gentleman on the train stopped me in the moment of mass exodus onto the platform of Metro Center to tell me that “it’s great to see someone reading Henry James in this day and age, let alone on the DC Metro.” Then we got flung in separate directions as the crowd from behind pushed through. He still managed to give me a thumbs-up while yelling out “there is hope for civilization”.
I think he was referring to me. How nice.
