Murals of Playa del Carmen, Mexico

With travel opening up slowly, I have heard from so many of you who have either already visited Mexico, or have plans in the near future. It made me think back to our Mexico trip a few years ago when we stayed in Playa Del Carmen along the Caribbean coast.

We had booked the trip via Costco Travel and were staying at the all-inclusive family resort called Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Esmeralda. I love the conveniences of an all-inclusive resort especially when traveling with kids, and Paradisus definitely delivered. However, like most such resorts, it felt so detached from reality. I mean, can you truly say you visited Playa del Carmen if you never really made it out of the resort gates?

I remember D. approaching the concierge at the hotel and asking him how we could walk to city center which was only a mile or so away when looking on the map. The concierge looked at us – then at our stroller with two kids – then back at us, not really knowing how to respond. Why did we want to walk, he asked, when taking a taxi was quick, easy, cheap, and air conditioned.

Nonetheless, walk we did and I am so glad, because look what we would have missed otherwise! The sidewalk into city center was lined with some of the most beautiful murals I have come across.

If you happen to be in the area, please let me know if these murals are still up, or if they have been replaced by other new ones.

Also, I am wondering, what cities have you visited where you unexpectedly fell in love with a mural(s)?
