A chance encounter with a lovely book { The Lost Words }

I ran into this book at my local library. At first it was the size and illustrations that caught my eye. But then I flipped it around and found an even more endearing reason to read it.

Heartbreaking – yes?

Each of the 10 words listed in the book is accompanied by a very lovely poem. The illustrations – aided by the large size of the book (15×11) – are even more captivating.

This would make for a lovely coffee-table book not only because it is so beautiful and substantial, but also because the poems are short and easy to follow; for that quick glimpse while waiting around.

All of it seems to linger in the head a little longer than you’d imagine.

For kids and adults alike. Especially as a gift for a friend who loves poetry, books, and pretty things.

  1. I’ve read some articles about kids losing touch with common, everyday things in nature. How many kids play outside anymore? Any exposure to wild spaces is exotic nowadays. I find in my own adult world, people around me don’t know the name of that black bird (no- it’s not a crow, that’s a raven) or any of the names of the wildflowers in the greenspaces that surround us. We elders ran free in the woods, got filthy, caught everything that moved, and recognized a level of existence that has become invisible to the modern world. Sad really because we need that connection to thrive.

    1. Ellis, it does feel like we have all lost touch with nature in this day and age. But I feel hopeful and try to spend as much time as possible being outside with the kids. It may be hard to get them over the threshold because of all the gadgets and distractions inside, but once we are outside it only takes a minute to see how irresistable nature can be. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and I hope that you continue to share your stories of running wild as kids with all the littles in your life! Afterall, a good story can lead to lots of good things.
